Carters Solicitors has a long and distinguished history in Pontefract. For almost 150 years we have been offering our many clients a friendly and professional service from our practise in Ropergate.

Mr William Edward Carter took out his first Practising Certificate in 1835 and started practising in Sheffield. In 1858 he moved to Pontefract and purchased a town house from Nostel Priory Estates and commenced practise there. That town house is now part of the Ropergate office.

Mr Carter was joined by Mr Jas Bentley and later he was joined by Mr Edward Norman Gundill and by 1916 the firm was called ‘Carter Bentley & Gundill’. It retained that name until 1999 when it merged with Woods Solicitors of Featherstone and the name was changed to ‘Carters’.
